Happy 50th!

This weekend my parents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary among friends and family. It was beautiful weather and my brother's place was the perfect location. With everyone's crazy, busy life it takes a special event or funeral to get everyone together. So not only did we celebrate the moment we also received a gift of sorts: an event to bring everyone together. Seeing aunts, uncles, cousins and family friends I hadn't seen for a while was very nice indeed.

Thanks Maureen for taking point on organization, thanks Lyle and Carol for offering your place and being exemplary hosts, and thanks everyone who came.

And Mom and Dad, I love you very much. Congratulations!

Meeting every Tuesday for the last 10 years the Rogue Writers admit to consuming gallons of coffee and tea, unknown quantities of wine, and "several cigarettes". Known individually as Colleen Heinrich, Raquel Garcia, Gerhard Winkler and Moira Thompson, they managed a bit of writing, too. Friday January 28th at 32 Books friends and well wishers celebrated the launch of the Rogue's first book: ten years of tuesdays, a collection of short stories and poems.

Gerhard Winkler introduced the evening with Rogue trivia, including the significance of the word aquamarine in each of their biographies. The biographies started as a writing exercise where ten specific words had to be used, one of them aquamarine. Though their biographies shared common words, their readings revealed distinct voices.

Colleen Heinrich read her poem "Editorial License" and short story "Texas". "Texas" is a thoughtful and bittersweet story about relationships, perception and childhood memories. "Editorial License" is a sarcastically fun poem about selective memory when a relationship is over:

Like Russia, you edit the past.

Raquel Garcia read her story "Amalita". Her soft voice and Spanish accent took us to Buenos Aires for a recounting of her explorations of the city and its history with the indomitable Amalita:

2 Steps Forward, 1 Step Back

Welcome to my “new” old site! I know it looks the same and some *cough* all *cough* of the content isn’t here yet, but doesn’t it seem like an improvement?!

After playing around with my own version of a Content Management System (CMS) it was time to stop soloing. Welcome to Digital Doodles in "Drupal-Vision", er implemented in Drupal. It's time to stop re-inventing the wheel so I have some time to use it.

Those familiar with the old site will immediately recognize that some content is missing. That's the one step back part. It's still around, and will eventually make its way here. Until then, it's available at http://www.digitaldoodles.com/oldindex.php.

Happy Chinese New Year!

Congratulations and be prosperous, everyone.

This gregorian year the Chinese new year starts on February 9th. If you haven't already guessed from the graphic, it's the year of the Rooster. Don't do any cleaning on the 9th, least you sweep away your luck! (Now all I need is an excuse for the other 364 days)

Northern Voice

Do you blog? Have you thought about blogging? Have you wondered what podcasting is all about or been interested in trying it?

If you've answered yes to any of the these questions check out Northern Voice.

Northern Voice is a one-day, non-profit community blogging conference being held at the UBC downtown campus on February 19, 2005. The awesome news, it only cost $20 to attend!!! This is a full day event with a first class lineup of speakers and it costs less than seeing two movies. If you're the least bit interested, this is a no-brainer.

Homemade Pyrotechnics

Found this on a defunct Digital Doodles web page I was cleaning up. It's old news but it seemed appropriate to feature something fireworks related on New Years:

The Mother of All Sparklers!

This is what happens when you tie 500 to 1000 sparklers in a tight bundle and light them up. If you like what you see, there's instructions, too.

All the Best in 2005!

Digital Doodles Has Moved!

Moving truckMan carrying file cabinetDigital Doodles has moved to a new host!

Happily, the move was easier than expected. Copy the data, update some variables, and c'est voila. There was bump (damn DNS caching) and a learning curve on the new host's management interface, but those only caused a small delay. Here's hoping the future is as smooth.

Guess it's time for some fresh content!
