Happy Holidays, Everyone!

I hope you have have a wonderful holiday, how ever you celebrate it. (And for those of you who do Christmas: Don't worry, I'm ready if Santa needs help!)

Good bye, Mr. Dressup

Ernie Coombs, the man who was Mr. Dressup, died today. I'm very sad. Along with Casey and Finnegan, he was a part of my life nearly every day until I started grade one.

Thank you Mr. Coombs, for the wonderful memories you gave me. Good bye, Mr. Dressup. I'll miss you.

Thar be Dragon ... Boats!

Spent a wonderful day at the Dragon Boat Festival. No races today, but some very cool entertainment.I even took some pictures.

Although there were a few Dragon Boat teams practicing, today was primarily about entertainment. They had some great groups. I only had a chance to catch four of them, they were all excellent. For more information on the Dragon Boat Festival, check out their website:

Powers of 10

Somewhere out there is a movie which showed a progressive zooming from space to the earth in powers of 10. I first saw it in high school and have never forgotten it. The Optical Microscopy Division of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory has done a flash presentation, Powers of 10, on their Molecular Expressions web site. Java the way it should be used. Very cool, check it out!

Knight's Tale Movie Review

A peasant seizes the opportunity to fulfill his life dream of becoming a knight by assuming the identity of his dead master at a jousting tournement.

As Queen's "We Will Rock You" plays during the opening credits one notices the peasants at the tournament are stomping and clapping in rhythm, a big hint that the movie won't be historically accurate. If this is a big thing for you, don't see this movie.

"A Knight's Tale" is a feel good fairy tale about dreaming the big dream, being true to yourself and your friends, behaving honourably, and ultimately having dreams come true. Enormous liberties were taken with history but I didn't care. The characters were marvellous and I enjoyed watching them. Equally fun to watch were the jousting scenes.

This isn't to say all was perfect. Aside from mangling history the pacing of the story was a little off and I found it dragged in the middle. Towards the end I was set to throw my coffee at the screen if I heard the "change your stars" speech one more time. The ending tried too hard to be dramatic and wound up over the top.

"A Knight's Tale" is a fun throw away matinee movie, though I didn't mind paying full price.

Shrek Movie Review

Life was good. A swamp, some "No Trespassing" signs, and everyone too afraid to bother you. But what's an ogre to do when home sweet swamp becomes a refugee camp for nursery rhyme and fairy tale creatures? If your name is Shrek, you do a deal with the local despot and go on a quest to restore the status quo! A little something involving a princess, a dragon, and mortal danger, more or less.

"Shrek" is an irreverent hero's quest wrapped in a fairy tale with lots of well executed comedy and excellent animation. Our unlikely hero isn't out to get the girl, he's in it purely for his own self interest. Along the way he fesses up to some bad lifestyle choices and risks being hurt to change a better life. Princess Fiona seemingly echo's today's woman. She's more than able to take care of herself but fears she will only be loved for her beauty so she waits for her Prince Charming to rescue her hoping love will overcome a certain skeleton in her closet. Unfortunately, Shrek's deeper exploration of the human condition isn't very.

Don't worry, you don't need to give a damn about that stuff. There's lots of wonderful sight gags, movie references, humour, a bit of truly whacked humour, great tunes and fart jokes. (As much as I'm dying too, I won't give away a single thing.) Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona) and John Lithgow (Lord Farquaad) all give wonderful performances. Eddie Murphy's performance of Donkey gets special credit. His character was critical for keeping the story moving and Murphy delivered.

May Crypto-Gram Newsletter

The latest Cypto-Gram, a free monthly newsletter on computer security and cryptography from Bruce Schneier, is excellent, as usual. It contains some thoughtful pieces like "The Futility of Digital Copy Prevention", news and a quote I can't resist repeating: "No place is so strongly fortified that money could not capture it."
