Review: Empire of Ivory by Naomi Novik

Empire of Ivory is the fourth book in the Temeraire series, by Naomi Novik, and literally picks up where book three left off. Far from a happy homecoming, Captain Will Laurence and dragon Temeraire discover an epidemic is ravaging the Aerial Corps. As one of the few healthy dragon teams left, if falls to Laurence and Temeraire to search out a cure ... a search taking them to Africa: the dark continent.

Rated: 4 / 5

Book three, Black Powder War, had me a little worried. I didn't enjoy it as much as the first two and I wondered if Novik was starting to lose focus. Empire of Ivory stopped my worrying ways. Although it wasn't the "can't put it down" book that His Majesty's Dragon was, it was close! But be forewarned, this book ends on a cliff-hanger (damn it). If I'd known I would have waited for book five's release before reading it. Or tried, at least. Though Novik is proving she can write consistent page turners, I'm not sure about the direction of the series story arc. I can't continue in detail without spoilers. Suffice to say, Novik continues exploring personal choice and conflicts between loyalty, duty, friendship, and personal integrity.
